Subject:Question re: DNS settings and setting up relay gateway

We have a mailserver that primarily sends emails (m1.example.com), and then
another one that receives emails to a domain (example.com). I have a
question about how to set up the DNS records and/or /etc/host file for
having m1.example.com relay example.com mail that is received.

What does the DNS for example.com need to look like? Does it's MX record
point to m1.example.com or to itself?
Similar question re: what the DNS for m1.example.com, which will never
receive any messages, but only send them.

Do I need to use /etc/hosts on m1.example.com to point to example.comserver?

I just want to make sure I get the DNS settings correct, so that reverse
lookups won't fail, etc and the relay_domains and transport mappings will
work from m1.example.com.

Any help greatly appreciated.

thanks!
Kim
