Thanks for your help. I followed the advice - did a re-install of Solaris
10 and then compiled the latest 'stable' version of Postfix (2.4, patchlevel
6). After editing my local configuration information, the system is now
running smoothly. Thanks for the pointers.

Very strange that the package install failed in this way. I got the package
from the 'stable' section of the Solaris 5.10 section of Blastwave.org. I
thought that packages from there would be stable and easy to install. I
guess I'll be more careful next time.
