Subject:OT: WinXP Japanese character set?

This does not appear to be a FF issue specifically because the same issue
is occurring in IE but maybe someone can help. When I view such pages as
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana I am seeing little boxes in place of
where I suspect Japanese characters should display. For example, on the
page cited, right after "Katakana," the first word of the first paragraph,
I see "(" followed by three boxes, a comma, four boxes, the word "or" then
four more boxes. What might I need to do to make hirigana, katakana, and
kanji characters display as they were intended to?

Apologies if this is an inappropriate posting for this NG.
